COURSE GLOSSARY
acute:

brief or having a short course as opposed to chronic (long-lasting, said of a condition that lasts over a long period).

affinity:

love, liking or any other emotional attitude; the degree of liking. The basic definition of affinity is the consideration of distance, whether good or bad.

atomic bomb:

an extremely destructive type of bomb, the power of which results from the immense quantity of energy suddenly released with the splitting of the nuclei (centers) of atoms into fragments.

augmented:

made (something already developed) greater, as in size, extent or quantity.

authoritarianism:

the system or practice of an authority (or authorities), one who is a supposed expert or one whose opinion on a subject is likely to be accepted without question and without reference to facts or results. Under authoritarianism individual freedom of judgment and action would be neglected in favor of absolute obedience to “experts.”

avowedly:

openly acknowledged or declared.

axioms:

statements of natural laws on the order of those of the physical sciences.

bad off:

in a bad or poor condition or circumstance.

beingness:

condition or state of being; existence. Beingness also refers to the assumption or choosing of a category of identity. Beingness can be assumed by oneself or given to oneself or attained. Examples of beingness would be one’s own name, one’s profession, one’s physical characteristics, one’s role in a game—each or all of these could be called one’s beingness.

bootstraps, lifting oneself by one’s:

raising or bettering oneself by one’s own unaided efforts. It alludes to the considerable effort required in pulling on long boots by the means of straps or loops attached to the top of them.

cabal:

secret intrigue; plot or crafty dealing.

capricious:

tending to change unpredictably or abruptly with no apparent reason; erratic.

case:

a general term for a person being treated or helped.

charitable:

kindly or lenient in judging people, acts, etc.

chronic:

long-lasting, said of an illness or condition that lasts over a long period.

circuit:

in electricity, a complete route traveled by an electrical current and which carries out specific actions. In Scientology, the term is used to describe something in the mind acting as a circuit does, performing various functions, especially independently of the person’s own volition.

Clear:

an unaberrated person. He is rational in that he forms the best possible solutions he can on the data he has and from his viewpoint. He is called a “Clear” because his basic personality, his self-determinism, his education and experience have been cleared of aberrative engrams, secondaries and locks. comm:

short for communication.

comprehensive:

including everything, so as to be complete.

confront:

1. to be in one’s way, as in “a real emergency confronts him.” 2. to face without flinching or avoiding. The ability to confront is actually the ability to be there comfortably and perceive.

constancy:

steadfastness of attachment to a person; faithfulness.

covert:

concealed, hidden or disguised; not openly practiced or shown.

crane:

a large machine used to lift and move heavy objects by means of a hook attached to cables suspended from a supporting, usually movable, beam.

depository illness:

an illness in which deposits of material are formed in some part of the body, such as arthritis where hardened bits of cartilage form in the joints, causing swelling and deformity.

dynamics:

the dynamics are the urge to survive expressed through a spectrum with eight divisions. These are urges for survival as or through (1) self; (2) sex, the family and the future generation; (3) groups; (4) Mankind; (5) life, all organisms; (6) matter, energy, space and time—mest—the physical universe; (7) spirits; and (8) the Supreme Being. endocrine:

of or having to do with the system of glands which secretes hormones (chemical substances) from certain organs and tissues in the body. These glands and their hormones regulate the growth, development and function of certain tissues and coordinate many processes within the body. For example, some of these glands increase blood pressure and heart rate during times of stress.

engram:

a moment of “unconsciousness” containing physical pain or painful emotion and all perceptions, which is not available to the analytical mind (conscious, aware mind) as experience. It is a complete recording, down to the last accurate detail, of every perception present in a moment of partial or full “unconsciousness.”

entheta:

a compound word meaning enturbulated theta, theta in a turbulent state, agitated or disturbed. See also theta.

entheta lines:

entheta communication lines, lines which are vicious or slanderous.

enturbulates:

causes turbulence, agitation and disturbance.

environ:

environment; surroundings.

ethics:

the actions an individual takes on himself to correct some conduct or situation in which he is involved which is contrary to the ideals and best interests of his group. It is a personal thing. When one is ethical or “has his ethics in,” it is by his own determinism and is done by himself.

flighty:

given to sudden whims (sudden or odd desires); not taking things seriously; frivolous (lack of seriousness) or irresponsible.

graduated scale:

a scale of condition graduated from zero to infinity. The word graduated is meant to define lessening or increasing degrees of condition. The difference between one point on a graduated scale and another point could be as different or as wide as the entire range of the scale itself, or it could be so tiny as to need the most minute discernment (ability to perceive the difference) for its establishment.

grave:

causing, involving or arising from a threat of danger, harm or other bad consequences.

Hubbard Chart of Human Evaluation:

a chart by which one can precisely evaluate human behavior and predict what a person will do. It displays the various characteristics that exist at different levels of the Tone Scale.

humanities:

branches of learning concerned with human thought and relations, as distinguished from the sciences; especially literature, philosophy, history, etc. (Originally, the humanities referred to education that would enable a person to freely think and judge for himself, as opposed to a narrow study of technical skills.)

illustrative:

serving to illustrate; explanatory.

infallibly:

in a manner that is infallible, not liable to prove false, wrong or mistaken.

intrinsically:

in a way that is intrinsic, belonging to something as one of the basic and essential elements that make it what it is.

invalidates:

says or does something that makes another person appear wrong.

knuckle under:

submit to; yield.

leprous:

marked by the physical symptoms of leprosy, especially in being pale or scaly. Leprosy is a tropical disease that mainly affects the skin and nerves and can cause tissue change.

mass:

the actual physical objects, the things of life.

mired:

involved in difficulties that are hard to escape from; entangled. Literally, a mire is a wet, slimy soil of some depth or deep mud.

negation:

a refusal or contradiction; a denial of something.

neurological:

having to do with the nerves and the nervous system.

obnosis:

a coined word put together from “observing the obvious.” It is the action of a person looking at another person or an object and seeing exactly what is there, not a deduction of what might be there from what he does see.

perversion:

1. any of various means of obtaining sexual gratification that are generally regarded as abnormal. 2. a turning aside from truth or right; diversion to an improper use.

phenomena:

things that appear or are perceived or observed; individual facts, occurrences or changes as perceived by any of the senses or by the mind: applied chiefly to a fact or occurrence, the cause or explanation of which is under observation or being scientifically described.

physiology:

the functions and activities of living organisms and their parts, including all physical and chemical processes.

posed:

offered (as a threat).

positive suggestion:

in hypnosis, a suggestion or command which is given to a hypnotized subject who then obeys it unwittingly.

postulate:

a conclusion, decision or resolution about something.

processing:

a special form of personal counseling, unique in Scientology, which helps an individual look at his own existence and improves his ability to confront what he is and where he is. Processing is a precise, thoroughly codified activity with exact procedures.

propitiation:

a low emotion below anger and close to apathy. Propitiation is the act of trying to please or satisfy someone in a way calculated to win their favor in order to defend or protect oneself against their disapproval, attack, etc.

reality:

that which appears to be. Reality is fundamentally agreement; the degree of agreement reached by people. What we agree to be real is real.

Scientology:

Scientology is a practical religion dealing with the study of knowledge, which through application of its technology can bring about desirable changes in the conditions of life. It was developed over a third of a century by L. Ron Hubbard. The term Scientology is taken from the Latin word scio (knowing, in the fullest meaning of the word) and the Greek word logos (study of). Scientology is further defined as the study and handling of the spirit in relationship to itself, universes and other life.

slipshod:

marked by indifference or carelessness.

sublimated:

turned into something higher, nobler or more refined.

successive:

happening or existing one after another.

sustenance:

means of sustaining life; nourishment.

theta:

thought or life. The term comes from the Greek letter theta (), which the Greeks used to represent thought or perhaps spirit. Something which is theta is characterized by reason, serenity, stability, happiness, cheerful emotion, persistence and the other factors which Man ordinarily considers desirable.

Tone Scale:

a scale which shows the successive emotional tones a person can experience. By “tone” is meant the momentary or continuing emotional state of a person. Emotions such as fear, anger, grief, enthusiasm and others which people experience are shown on this graduated scale.

trance:

to put in a trance or hypnotic condition. A trance (also called hypnotic trance) is a state, as induced by hypnosis, in which somebody is dazed or stunned or in some other way not fully aware of the present environment.

unavailing:

being of no use.

upscale:

higher on the Tone Scale.

up the line:

figuratively, in or to a higher position or state.

vacillation:

the act of wavering in mind, will or feeling; hesitation in choice of opinions or courses.
